I think this is what pisses me off most about driving these days.

I once got in a car with a coworker who told me halfway through that he didn't have car insurance, which is illegal in this state. He then revved his engine at some women using a crosswalk. I determined I will never see this person outside of work ever again.

I took my Cutlass out earlier and I was worried the teeny-bopper behind me was going to keep inching forward at the stop light until she finally rear ended me.

I've heard that before, but with "drinking" in place of "texting". The results are similar.

Weirdly, what pisses me off the most while driving is not driving while texting, because I don't think I've ever encountered a person that did that, but people that think they're so important that absolutely none of the laws apply to them.

Fuck that guy, it's one thing to be an idiot but another to be an idiot and a dick all at once. Buddy of mine once told me to "hold the wheel real quick" while he pulled his phone out of his pocket and played through his turn in Words with Friends. Motherfucker actually let go of the damn wheel and made me steer through a curvy road for about ten seconds with two other people in the car. It took me about a week for me to fully calm down and start talking to him again, and the whole time he was wondering why I got so pissed off.

Dude is now a senior in pre-med with a scholarship to UNC for his medical degree. I assure you the irony is completely lost on him.

They ought to just confiscate phones from anyone caught texting and driving. Lose the phone or your license, if you can't be responsible enough to keep them separate yourself someone else will do it for you. Might be a tad excessive but would get a point across.

Perhaps the irony is lost on YOU, in a cosmic sort of way. A ditsy dangerous man will soon be fully licensed to save other people's lives and earn a nice living. Clearly you should have been more reckless in your youth!

Never looked at it like that. The universe is clearly balancing out the yin of stupidity with the yang of the years of lifesaving medical practice in this guy's future. Or he'll kill all his patients because he's a dumbass, one or the other.

Joking aside the dude is actually an extremely bright guy, but like all kids my age think texting and driving is just like not a big deal. A "all of the brains, none of the common sense" kind of thing.

And I've bombed more than enough backroads late at night during pizza deliveries to put myself in the red as far as the forces of the universe are concerned, I don't need any more bad karma hanging over my head.

Sad thing is it's not just the idiot 16-year-olds who just got their licenses, it's freaking everyone man. I deliver pizzas over college breaks and I've seen grandparents and doctors and lawyers all on their phones. People have always been apathetic while driving, I think just now with the proliferation of cell phones we have a single way to identify all the idiots.

I'm lucky enough not to know anyone like that but I have heard a few people 'bragging' about it in passing during my three years here in college. It's not so much the lack of self-preservation instinct that amazes as much as the willful disregard for other people's lives.

worst part wasnt even their fault. Other guy driving a lifted Tahoe hit them head on in their older Civic. Tahoe essentially went over them crushing the Civic...

just stupid bs that never shouldve happened. Its why I lock my phone in my glovebox whenever I drive

If anyone is wandering over in their lane or otherwise not driving like a normal non-distracted person, I assume they're texting or at least looking at their phone. The classic thing is when they leave like 5 car lengths in slow-moving traffic, so they think they'll have more time once they look back up to react. I get almost road-rage mad at people when I think they're texting and wandering over into my lane or otherwise being erratic—the fact that it's so unnecessary and so selfish of them just makes it so much worse. And I drive with an almost paranoid fear of one just crossing over in the opposite direction or next to me. Of course, distracted driving has always been a problem, with usually new drivers paying attention to their friends or looking for a CD or in the old days cassette tape or 8-track they want to listen to (a girl looking for a cassette tape killed several bicyclists near Santa Cruz, California 15 or so years ago). When I see someone glancing at the phone in their hand while cruising down a residential street, even young mothers do this, I just want to scream at them. If you're making a call, you couldn't have started it before you started off? Don't have the budget for a voice recognition in your expensive car? It cant' freaking wait until you stop for a light? I know I am just terrible at even driving while talking on a bluetooth, so I do it almost never, and will pull over if I really need to talk. If they could keep accurate statistics about just cellphone related crashes, I think the numbers would be just shocking. But the most frustrating part is that there isn't a damn thing that will convince anyone who is doing this to stop because they haven't yet had consequences from their behavior, certainly not tragic ones. I would support having drivers-to-be have to take a course which required them to try to drive around a closed course once with no cell and a few times trying to send a text message or make a call. As with the TV shows where they show people in a controlled situation how even a few drinks compromises your reactions driving, I think seeing how that works in reality would open at least a few eyes. I think cellphone use, including texting and calls, is the biggest threat out there today and the most likely to stop the auto accident rate from declining.

Mrs. NotUnless had a terrifying cab ride the other night, where the cabby almost ran into a bus on the freeway because he was busy texting. She had to draw his attention to the fact this was not acceptable.

It's so not worth it.

I know I'd be terrible at it, I reached for a water bottle one time and swerved a bit, that alone scared the shit out of me. DAMN YOU WATER BOTTLE. And it was in the cup holder near my leg not somewhere crazy like the passenger floor.

Talking on the phone is shit, too, especially when you have to hold i t.

The people who think they can do it stopped at a light...urg. Light changes...car doesn't move. Count to four...blow horn. Driver's head pops up...so either masturbating furiously or texting...

three to five times a week? I see it three to five times every commuting drive! Mostly we are going 0-20-0, 0-30-0, and so many people are staring at their steering wheels.... I mean phones... and tapping away at them. With the weaving and huge gaps, did you think the rest of us weren't noticing? Argh!

I try like hell to avoid it, but find the voice recognition in Waze really stinks. I'll have to try to use it more! But just for reporting hazards and such, with their large easy buttons I swear. No typing.
